On a recent edition of his “Everybody’s Got A Pod” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Ted DiBiase Sr. shared his belief that fellow WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross is the greatest announcer in the history of professional wrestling.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On whether Jim Ross is the greatest announcer of all time: “Yeah. He was good. And again, Jim Ross started with Cowboy Bill Watts. And so he learned from the best, too.”
On whether he’s close friends with Ross outside of the ring: “Well yeah, I mean, not bosom buddies. But yeah, I mean he’s one of those guys. You know, it’s not somebody that — again, wrestling is wrestling . And sometimes you don’t see people for a long time. But when you see him again, it’s like you saw him yesterday. You just pick up where you left off.”
On whether there was talk of breaking up Money Inc after the 1992 SummerSlam: “No. It was kind of like, by that time you know I had been there — again, what year was this? It’s ’92. Going into ’92, and I had been with him since 87. And I’d done the singles thing, took it as far as we could take it. The thing about wrestling is, you have to move things around. I mean it’s like, you can’t come in and be the top guy all the time. Because after a while, it’s like, ‘Okay, we’ve seen him, we’ve seen him.’ You stay there, you stay visible now, but you’re not the main event every night. You move down a couple notches. And then as time goes by, you know, they can do something and move you back up. That’s how they usually do it.”
In the world of professional wrestling, there have been many iconic figures who have left a lasting impact on the industry. One such individual is Jim Ross, who is widely regarded as the greatest announcer in the history of professional wrestling. This sentiment was recently shared by WWE Hall of Famer Ted DiBiase Sr. during an episode of his podcast, “Everybody’s Got A Pod.”
DiBiase’s admiration for Ross stems from the latter’s early days in the business. Ross began his career working under Cowboy Bill Watts, a legendary figure in professional wrestling. This experience allowed Ross to learn from one of the best in the industry, honing his skills and developing a unique style that would captivate audiences for years to come.
What sets Ross apart from other announcers is not only his technical proficiency but also his ability to connect with the audience. His voice became synonymous with some of the most memorable moments in wrestling history, adding an extra layer of excitement and emotion to matches. Ross had a knack for storytelling, painting a vivid picture of the action unfolding in the ring and making viewers feel like they were right there in the arena.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ross also forged meaningful relationships with his colleagues. While not necessarily “bosom buddies,” DiBiase describes Ross as one of those individuals with whom you can pick up where you left off, even after a long time apart. This speaks to the camaraderie and mutual respect that exists within the wrestling community.
One interesting aspect of Ross’s career discussed in the podcast is the potential breakup of the tag team Money Inc after the 1992 SummerSlam. DiBiase explains that in wrestling, it is essential to keep things fresh and dynamic. Staying at the top for too long can lead to audience fatigue, so it is necessary to move wrestlers around and give others a chance to shine. This constant evolution ensures that fans are always engaged and invested in the product.
Overall, Jim Ross’s impact on professional wrestling cannot be overstated. His contributions as an announcer have elevated the industry, and his ability to connect with audiences has made him a beloved figure among fans. Whether it was his iconic calls or his genuine passion for the sport, Ross’s influence will continue to be felt for years to come. As Ted DiBiase Sr. rightly asserts, Jim Ross is indeed the greatest announcer in the history of professional wrestling.
