Ted DiBiase Sr. will never forget how he felt after learning of the murder of Bruiser Brody in June 1988.
Brody was stabbed to death by José González in the showers of a wrestling event in Puerto Rico and his death was later covered on an episode of Dark Side of The Ring.
Recalling Brody’s death during the “Everybody’s Got A Pod” podcast, DiBiase speculated that Brody could have survived if medical personnel arrived sooner. He said,
“I was just sick. I mean, for a guy of his stature. To die that way. It was like he got knifed by a guy hiding the knife. And it wasn’t like, ‘Hey, come on, let’s fight.’ It’s like because they had a confrontation. And Brody isn’t going to back up from anybody. He put the guy in his place. And then he couldn’t stand that. So, he gets knifed in the shower and bleeds to death.
“They said it took a long time to get there. And I mean, if they could have got to him quick, I don’t think he’d have died. But I don’t know. It’s just. Yeah, it’s just horrible.”
Due to the heavy traffic outdoors and large crowd in the stadium, it took paramedics close to an hour to reach Brody after the stabbing.
González claimed self-defense and was acquitted of murder in 1989 though several key witnesses did not receive their summons until after the trial had ended.
After Brody had worked stiff in a match with González, S.D. Jones claims that González said to him “One day I am gonna kill that man.”
