In a recent interview on “The Ariel Helwani Show,” WWE alum Sonya Deville (known as Daria Berenato offstage) opened up about her experiences being the first openly gay female Superstar in her organization.

Discussing how her sexuality was received behind the scenes at WWE, Deville expressed positivity.

Highlights from the podcast interview are outlined as follows:

Regarding the acceptance of her sexuality by her WWE co-workers: “No hate or discrimination was shown backstage in WWE towards me because of my sexuality. I was just Daria. In WWE, I see no prevalence of hate or discrimination. Everyone has a unique story. Talking about MMA, there are different organizations, but WWE is tighter knit. We go on tours together consistently. MMA could be on a different scale, right? Maybe things are a bit more personal in WWE, and people prefer to keep their private lives to themselves.”

Reflecting on her self-acceptance and celebrating her sexuality in WWE: “When I got nice messages from folks, saying, ‘Thank you for speaking your truth,’ I was so moved. I had not realized the impact. I was ignorant about it. I was like, ‘Wow. I’m doing something people appreciate and I should appreciate myself too.’ I felt really energized and supported it.”
