In a recent conversation with MSN, top AEW talent, Chris Jericho, expressed his views on the role of social media in professional wrestling.
He points out that today’s wrestlers could potentially be negatively affected by social media. This could occur if they suddenly gain significant popularity among fans, which could lead to them being pressured into rushing their development.
He shared, “Back in those days, you could have really bad matches for years and you would learn. Now, it’s all out there for everyone to see. I think from an experience perspective, guys and girls are rushed because of that. On the plus side, your performances can be accessed on platforms like YouTube and if you’re genuinely skilled, you can quickly generate a significant buzz around yourself, then you could in previous years. In the initial stages of my career, reputation and image were built more through word of mouth, magazine features, and the diverse territories that you’re working in, like Japan. Eventually, you could create a persona and transition to the United States.”
