Should The AEW International & Continental Titles Be Merged? | Question Of The Day

We’re back with another Question of the Day from eWrestlingNews!

Recently, a new report surfaced suggesting that All Elite Wrestling (AEW) could be preparing to unify their International Championship and Continental Championship.

Today’s topic is “Should these two titles be combined?”

Feel free to share your thoughts and viewpoints in the comment section below.

Here’s my take on this…

I wholly advocate for AEW to merge these titles, and my stance is backed up by various factors.

Firstly, the presence of three midcard titles for the men’s division seems excessive. Even if there was a brand division between Dynamite and Collision, this would only validate the existence of two titles, not three. Overloading titles to dodge storytelling is not an approach that resonates with me, and it’s something I also dislike about New Japan’s strategy. When everyone holds a title, it loses its significance.

Besides, the term “Continental Championship” doesn’t sound captivating to me. I’ve always found region-based titles illogical as they often lack clear differentiation. Is there any real distinction between the AEW World title and the AEW International title? Being “world” titles, both imply global competence. Unless one is deemed the supreme championship for arbitrary reasons, their difference is left vague. Why not introduce the AEW Earth Championship and the AEW Seven Continents Championship?

Consider this scenario: Kenny Omega defeats Konosuke Takeshita to clinch the International Championship. Omega then squares off against Kazuchika Okada at All In: Texas to unify the titles. Post this, the midcard lineup includes the AEW TNT Championship (albeit, I propose a renaming, much like the TBS Championship) and the AEW International/Continental Championship. If the compulsion is to retain some regional reference, let’s cut to the chase and introduce the AEW Intercontinental Championship. That seems to be the general expectation, anyway.
