Shawn Spears Explains The Reason For Wearing The Black Glove

Shortly after the AEW Double or Nothing pay-per-view, Tully Blanchard gifted Shawn Spears with a black glove similar to that worn by Barry Windham, Ted DiBiase, and Blackjack Mulligan. With many fans still asking for a reason for that glove being necessary, Shawn Spears posted a video on Twitter explaining exactly why he wears the black glove, it’s for self-defense.

“So why the glove? I can understand your questions. What I can’t understand, though, are negative and uninformed connotations that you consistently throw my way, which makes sense because they are only a direct insight to the kind of people that you really are,” Spears began. “You think you know my industry? OK, well, here it is. Your world is safe, you’re the master of your own domain. You’re the lion. You’re the king of your own jungle. My world is vastly different in my world.”

He continued, “There are countless hyenas masquerading as lions and they’re always looking for their next meal, just looking to sneak up on you from behind. They are willing to take your throat for everything you’ve worked for. So, like I said, your world is safe. So what am I supposed to do? What would you do? [Spears defines self-defense:] The defense of one’s personal interests through the act of physical force, which is permitted in certain cases as an answer to a violent act.”

So you understand now. It was never my intention to hurt anybody. This is the one thing that will never turn its back on me. It’s the one thing that I can rely on and it is the one thing. There will always be there when I need it. This glove is not a weapon, it’s my protector.
