Although WWE originally planned for World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins to defend his title against CM Punk at WrestleMania 40, plans changed once Punk tore his triceps.
Speaking to Denise Salcedo of Instinct Culture, Rollins was asked about the match getting nixed.
“One of us is a fragile old man and one of us is a young stallion. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks, he’ll be back in a year or two until his next injury. I don’t know, I’d love to kick the crap out of him. I’m sure he’d love to get there and try to do something to me. It’s not going to work. Am I disappointed? I’d say a little bit. Only because I thought, if we had an opportunity to do it, stomping his head into the mat would be the best at WrestleMania. It would be the best at WrestleMania, in front of the biggest audience. A little bummed by that. I feel like, he’s talking about the greatest comeback of all time, I’ll be happy to stomp out that comeback when the time comes.”
WWE fans were eagerly anticipating a dream match between World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins and CM Punk at WrestleMania 40. However, their hopes were dashed when Punk suffered a triceps injury, forcing the match to be canceled.
In a recent interview with Denise Salcedo of Instinct Culture, Rollins expressed his disappointment over the match being nixed. He couldn’t help but take a jab at Punk, referring to him as a “fragile old man” compared to himself, a “young stallion.” Rollins confidently stated that while he would be back in the ring in a couple of weeks, Punk would need a year or two to recover from his injury before making a comeback.
Rollins didn’t hold back in expressing his desire to face Punk and “kick the crap out of him.” He believed that stomping Punk’s head into the mat would have been the highlight of WrestleMania, especially in front of the largest audience the event attracts. Rollins admitted feeling a little bummed by the missed opportunity but remained confident that he would have the chance to put an end to Punk’s touted “greatest comeback of all time” when the time comes.
The potential clash between Rollins and Punk had generated significant buzz among wrestling fans. Both superstars have had storied careers in WWE, with Rollins currently holding the prestigious World Heavyweight Championship. Punk, on the other hand, has been away from professional wrestling for several years but has maintained a strong following and has been teasing a return.
CM Punk’s departure from WWE in 2014 was surrounded by controversy and bitterness. The wrestler-turned-MMA fighter had voiced his frustrations with the company and its management, leading to his decision to leave. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting his return to the squared circle.
Seth Rollins, known for his high-flying moves and technical prowess, has established himself as one of the top stars in WWE. His reign as World Heavyweight Champion has been impressive, and he has successfully defended his title against formidable opponents. A match against Punk would have undoubtedly been a highlight of his championship reign.
While the cancellation of the Rollins vs. Punk match is disappointing for fans, it is not uncommon for plans to change in the world of professional wrestling. Injuries, contract negotiations, and creative decisions can all impact the direction of storylines and matches. However, the unpredictability of the industry often leads to exciting surprises and unexpected matchups.
As for CM Punk, his injury setback may delay his much-anticipated return to the ring. Fans will have to wait patiently to see if and when he will step back into a WWE ring and potentially face off against Seth Rollins. Until then, the wrestling world will continue to speculate and eagerly await the next chapter in this ongoing saga.
