Sammy Guevara On Being Compared To Wrestling Legends: ‘I’m Not Trying To Fill Anyone Else’s Shoes But My Own’
Sammy Guevara says he isn’t bothered when he’s compared to wrestling’s greats, but his focus is being a wrestler that future fans will point to as a real game-changer.
WrestleZone recently spoke with Guevara, who recently made headlines for his standout role in the Stadium Stampede match at AEW Double Or Nothing. The “Spanish God” has been embroiled in the feud between The Elite and the Inner Circle, but he’s also had his own issues with Darby Allin on AEW TV. In a previous interview, WrestleZone’s Dominic DeAngelo spoke to Allin about the parallels between their feud and Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels’ rivalry in WWE. Allin agreed that the similarities are certainly there, and Guevara said he also sees it but strives to shed the comparisons with great work.
“Oh 100%, but I think it’s even better than Shawn or Bret or any of those comparisons because we’re ‘Sammy and Darby’, we’re ‘Guevara and Allin’. I think in the next few years we’re definitely going to be taking over this industry. The next generation will be talking about how ‘this is a Sammy versus Darby type feud right here.’ I think we’re going to be game-changers. I know 100% I’m going to, and Darby is a crazy, crazy man, so he’s definitely going to be over there in the future with me.”
When asked if the comparisons ever get old, Guevara said it’s not something that bothers him, and sometimes it’s actually a compliment. He says he’s always been compared to other legends but right now he just wants to build his own name and prove to people he’s as good as he believes he is.
“I don’t even find it annoying or anything like that. I think it’s humbling at times. I’ve been compared to a young Eddie Guerrero and legends like that. It’s big shoes to fill but I’m not trying to fill anyone else’s shoes but my own. I think it’s awesome that I’m compared to these big names in the wrestling industry, but at the end of the day I’m just trying to make myself proud. I’m on my way to do what I’ve always said I was going to do and soon the entire world will see what I’ve been seeing up here all along.”
