Rob Van Dam was encouraged to “build a relationship” with Vince McMahon during his WWE run but was wary of what that suggestion really meant.
After a handful of appearances in 1997, RVD joined the WWF in 2001 as part of The Alliance, following the purchase of WCW and ECW.
On his “1 of a Kind” podcast, RVD recalled speaking to Bruce Prichard, who encouraged the future Hall of Famer to get along well with McMahon. He said,
“He was like, ‘You need to build a relationship with Vince. Vince needs to know that he can trust you, that you’re the guy he can invest in, that he can put the belt on that can lead this company. He needs to know that.’
“I was like are you saying I need to kiss his a**? I’m out there having great matches, the crowd’s going nuts, I don’t know what else you want from me. That’s one of the things that held me back as well.”
RVD would capture the WWE Championship in 2006 and was awarded the ECW World Championship shortly after, but lost both titles quickly after being arrested by police.
