Regarding his tenure during the WWE PG era, Van Dam stated, “The PG era wasn’t the most comfortable period to work in. Perhaps I was more restricted than I actually was, and that might have influenced me negatively. Fans often would remark, ‘Dude, they’re not letting you be the RVD from ECW. They’re not allowing you to perform any of your techniques’. However from my perspective, I was cut short on time for my matches and there were certain rules and restrictions. So naturally, the fans weren’t seeing the same RVD from ECW.”
Elaborating on his unique approach, he illustrated, “The complete package of ECW was unconventional, starting with my outlook towards the match, my vibe, rhythm, etc. I had no concerns about the ticking clock. There were times when I would casually roam around the ring, perhaps go to lock up and then instead just roll under the ropes to have a chit chat with fans. It was all about leisurely soaking in the environment and then getting back into the ring when ready. In contradiction, at WWE, everything seemed to be about live TV. There was a rush to meet the deadlines.”
