Everyone is eager to participate in John Cena’s farewell tour, including high-profile names like Matt Cardona, CM Punk, The Miz, and even the iconic Rob Van Dam.
During a recent episode of his podcast “1 Of A Kind”, Rob Van Dam, fondly known as RVD, addressed the topic of Cena’s retirement. As conversation veered towards a possible reiteration of the unforgettable main event at ECW One Night Stand 2006, RVD, now a WWE Hall of Famer, said:
“I anticipate they’ll invite me for a rematch with Cena. It would be an absolute thrill. I know I can deliver a match just as incredible as the last one.”
Obviously, the circumstances will be significantly different this time. The celebration of Cena, ranked #10 on WWE’s list of adversaries faced by RVD, would be the center of attention, rather than reprising RVD clinching a Money in the Bank contract to defeat Cena for the WWE Championship amidst controversial backlash against The Franchise Player.
Despite the high drama, RVD commended Cena for his handling of the highly divided crowd that night, saying:
“Cena showed his art of manipulating the crowd’s emotions. He faced a crowd that despised him, probably the most outspoken crowd ever, but he was ready for it. He managed it exceptionally well and I enjoyed collaborating with him. He was also incredibly self-assured.”
While RVD has not competed for WWE since August 26, 2014, when he triumphed over Seth Rollins on a WWE Main Event episode with a count-out victory, he hasn’t entirely disappeared from the wrestling scene. Recently, he was seen conquering Isiah Kassidy, Komander and Lee Johnson in an AEW Rampage match on April 20, 2024.
