An arena football team based in Iowa hopes to be kiss-stealin’, jet-flyin’, and wheelin’-dealin’ after being named after professional wrestling legend Ric Flair.
In a report from “The Courier,” it was announced that Waterloo, Iowa will be represented by the Waterloo Woos in the upcoming Arena League that launches in 2024.
The logo for the team includes a stylish-looking wolf complete with robe synonymous with the two-time WWE Hall of Famer.
Waterloo Woo General Manager Bailey McRae believes the fans in the stadium will play into the nickname, given the noise they’ll create. He said,
“Who does not want to go into an arena that has one of the best echo effects in the world and just scream ‘Woo!’ every time something cool happens.”
In a press release, it was said that the ‘Woo’ in the name references train whistles and represents the city’s history with railroads, though the nod to Flair in the logo is obvious.
Flair isn’t the first wrestler to inspire a sports team, with the Calgary Hitmen hockey team drawing inspiration from Bret ‘Hitman’ Hart.
