The Rock‘s potential in-ring return continues to be a topic of discussion, and the latest idea for that match has been revealed.

According to a new report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, an idea that’s been discussed would see The Rock return for a tag team match with Roman Reigns as one of his opponents. Continuing the ‘family’ storyline that’s currently playing out on WWE SmackDown, The Rock would team up with one of the Usos against Reigns and the other Uso twin.

It was noted that plans change so frequently, so this match could waver by the time WrestleMania rolls around, but the current storyline with the Usos is expected to be a major part of WrestleMania 38 plans. The Observer report also noted that WWE would like to run a singles match between The Rock and Roman Reigns, but if “concessions have to be made” in regards to protecting The Rock from injury, the tag team bout is one way they could go.

The Rock has not wrestled since WrestleMania 32 in 2016, an impromptu win over Erick Rowan. Prior to that, he had not wrestled since 2013, when he had two matches against CM Punk and lost the WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 29.

While he has not been active as a wrestler since then, Johnson has appeared on wrestling programming in the meantime. He was part of the SmackDown 20th Anniversary on October 4, 2019, where he cut a promo with Becky Lynch before beating up King Corbin, and also appeared in a pre-recorded video on IMPACT’s Bound For Glory pay-per-view in October 2020 where he inducted Ken Shamrock into the IMPACT Wrestling Hall Of Fame.

WWE has also reportedly discussed attempting to get “The Great One” back for an appearance at Survivor Series in November, which is also the 25th anniversary of his WWE debut. WrestleMania 38 is currently scheduled for April 3, 2022 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
