It’s been revealed this week that Vince McMahon, the well-known WWE figure, had plans to buy Netflix’s docuseries about himself to stop it from going on air.
Scheduled to be released on Netflix on September 25, the docuseries titled “Mr. McMahon” consists of six, hour-long episodes revolving around the life of the former WWE Chairman.
As per reports from Wrestling Observer Radio, it emerged that McMahon had intentions of blocking the show from airing by securing its rights from Netflix. Radio host, Dave Meltzer, reported,
“Vince indeed recognized that this documentary was not conforming to his original vision. This recognition came even before the Netflix-WWE deal was inked in January of this year… He appears to have tried purchasing the whole docuseries with the intent of shelving it.
“Like many media outlets or wealthy individuals who buy out unfavorable media coverage, Vince’s motive was to prevent its release. However, Netflix turned him down. His attempt to recruit Ari Emmanuel to intervene and halt the release also failed. So, here it stands now.”
Initiated in 2020, the filming of the project began before McMahon’s resignation from WWE following allegations of sexual wrongdoing with his female colleagues.
Covering a range of controversies, the docuseries delves deep into McMahon’s departure from WWE, and also addresses contentious topics like steroid use in wrestling and the Chris Benoit incidence.
Vince McMahon, 79 years of age, has made a public statement taking issue with the docuseries. He asserts that it attempts to portray him as a mirror image of his WWE character, which he criticizes as a misrepresentation.
WWE has embarked on a significant partnership with Netflix that will realize RAW transitioning to the streaming giant in January 2025.
