Report: Lucha Underground’s Return Is More Of A ‘Spiritual Successor’ Than A Reboot
Lucha Underground is coming back… sorta.
According to a new report in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the Lucha Underground ‘reboot’ that was mentioned a few weeks ago is actually more of a spiritual successor under the direction of Konnan and MLW’s Court Bauer. Fans may have noticed that the Azteca Underground angle they’ve been running on MLW Fusion is designed to share some common elements with show that aired on El Rey Network, but it’s not actually a reboot of the same promotion.
It’s been teased over the past few months that Promociones Dorado, the group led by Salina de la Renta, was quietly purchased by a man only known as El Jefe, a boss in the same vein as Dario Cueto in Lucha Underground. There are some other similar elements to LU, like a shot of the old Boyle Heights Temple from the original show, on the Azteca Underground website but a full-on revival of Lucha Underground isn’t likely.
The original Lucha Underground show was canceled after four seasons due to budget issues and a number of legal issues related to talent contracts. According to a recent report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com, there is “no movement” on an official LU revival, noting the team that actually owns the rights to the series, MGM, have not done anything new with the property to indicate they were bringing the show back.
