Aleister Black’s release from WWE remains one of the most puzzling departures in recent memory.

The former NXT Champion’s run on the main roster had been filled with various obstacles, but his recent repackaging made it seem like WWE was giving him another chance. Instead, Black was part of the latest wave of releases, just a few short weeks after he returned on WWE SmackDown.

The surprising, if not questionable, nature of his release has reportedly led to some backlash backstage. Mike Johnson of PWInsider reports that some members of the company believe that Black was “prematurely” let go, and these same voices are calling for WWE to re-sign him.

“It’s also interesting to note that in certain corners of the company, there’s been some talk that Aleister Black was cut prematurely and a push that the company should bring him back in,” wrote Johnson. “Whether anything comes of this or not remains to be seen, but as the shock of the releases last week wears off, there’s been a feeling that of everyone Black was ‘cut too soon’ and was more the victim of broken promises and start/stop creative more than of anything that he did of his own accord.”

WrestleZone will provide more details as they become available.
