Daria Berenato, popularly known as Sonya Deville in the world of WWE, is toying with the idea of making a comeback to mixed martial arts (MMA). Her association with WWE ended recently. The last time she was seen competing in amateur MMA was six years ago in 2015. Her final match ended in a loss against Jasmine Pouncy.
Having spent nearly a decade engaging in WWE, Deville made an appearance on “The Ariel Helwani Show.” She hinted that her journey in both professional wrestling and MMA is at a crossroads right now. She finds both options equally attractive.
Deville voiced her thoughts about the decision-making process. The direction she chooses will depend on where she feels her passion truly lies. What feels right for her at her current stage of life will drive her decision. Looking back at her journey in MMA, she divulged that she was quite emotionally affected when she shifted her focus to WWE. Being genuinely passionate about fighting and feeling that she was only beginning her MMA journey at 21, left a profound impact on her.
Deville stated, “I think the possibilities of me continuing my wrestling career and the possibilities of me resuming my MMA career are approximately equal right now. I’m at a life stage where my decisions will be determined by my desires and inner feelings. Nothing else will influence it. So, I will follow the path where my passion burns the strongest.”
She went on to say, “Leaving MMA for wrestling left me heart-wrenched. For about one to two years, I grappled with these feelings. Being 21 and at the dawn of something exciting, after participating in three fights, was thrilling, irrespective of the outcome of the last match. I was excited about embarking on the WWE journey, but the transition was tough as I deeply loved fighting.”
