Reason Why SmackDown Stars Are Involved In WWE World Heavyweight Title Tournament

A new WWE World Heavyweight Champion will be crowned on May 27 at the WWE Night of Champions 2023 pay-per-view event in Saudi Arabia.

On Monday’s RAW, there were two triple threat matches. The winners of those matches worked a singles match later in the night, which ended up being Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins, with the winner advancing to Night of Champions 2023. Rollins advanced to the finals. WWE will do the same on Friday’s episode of SmackDown.

Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the reason why WWE is using SmackDown talent in the Raw tournament is being done to help boost ratings when going up against strong NBA playoff competition. 

Meltzer added that AEW booked the Kenny Omega vs. Jon Moxley steel cage match for Wednesday’s Dynamite for the same reason.
