Queen of the Ring Movie Trailer Thoughts? | Question Of The Day

Welcome to another Q&A session from eWrestlingNews!

Seems like we’re riding the movie-themed wave this week. Yesterday we talked about Superman, and today we’re discussing the teaser trailer for the forthcoming movie Queen of the Ring, scheduled to hit the cinemas in March 2025.

The movie is an adaptation of a book and uncovers the untold story of Mildred Burke. It gives us a glimpse into the nascent days of women’s professional wrestling:

During times when women’s professional wrestling was considered a taboo and was banned nationwide, a lone mother from a small town decides to defy societal norms. She dares to dominate America’s most macho sport and eventually emerges as the first million-dollar female athlete in history.

The moving picture boasts of an ensemble cast (Emily Bett Rickards, Josh Lucas, Walton Goggins, Deborah Ann Woll, Josh Lucas, Martin Kove, Cara Buono, and others). The movie also promises cameo appearances from wrestlers like Jim Cornette, Britt Baker, Kamille, Naomi, Toni Storm, and Mickie James, who need no introduction.

Today’s question for all you fans is, “What are your thoughts on this teaser trailer, and do you plan to watch this movie?”

Looking forward to reading your thoughts in the comments down below.

As for my input …

I must confess, the trailer didn’t sweep me off my feet. It has the same narrative beats as countless other ‘underdog in the sport’ movies, and being honest, if I weren’t a wrestling enthusiast, I wouldn’t feel the urgency to watch it. I suppose I just don’t derive the same pleasure out of period dramas; it’s just not my cup of tea. Before you judge, I truly understand I’m not its primary demographic.

But, being an ardent wrestling fan, I can’t help but be drawn towards it. A movie about, say, soccer would not have caught my eye, but wrestling? It clearly has me enticed.

The star-studded cast is another attraction. If this were an ordinary direct-to-video movie featuring unknown faces, I’d have probably ignored it. But here, we have a handful of notable actors and actresses. For example, Kelli Berglund, who was brilliant in Heels, I’m interested to see what she brings to the table in yet another wrestling project.

Add to this, the inclusion of ‘our’ wrestlers from WWE and AEW. While not very big on “Timeless” Toni Storm, she seems to have a consequential role in this, and I’m hoping she will ace it.

In the context of the movie, while I do not allegiance to Mildred Burke or any other wrestler from her era for that matter, be it men or women, I’m looking forward to the heightened dramatization of the sport and the characters. I hope it will make it more thrilling than the actual matches by Mae Young, June Byers, and their contemporaries. Take, for example, The Iron Claw which featured The Von Erichs wrestling style, I thought it was excellent.

So, yes, even though I may find it less enjoyable than The Iron Claw, I will be adding it to my must-watch list. What about you?
