On a recent edition of his “Tuesday with The Taskmaster” podcast, former AAA booker Kevin Sullivan speculated about the potential headliner matches for WrestleMania 40, assuming Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson doesn’t compete.
According to the former booker, CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns are the likely frontrunners to main event WrestleMania 40.
You can check out some highlights from the podcast below:
On the primary bouts for WrestleMania 40: “I think you’re gonna end up seeing Cody and Roman as the main event, and I like the idea of ‘Freakin Rollins against Punk for Night 1. I think they’ve already started telling the story for [Punk versus Rollins] by holding them back, giving each other the finger, causing sh*t backstage … I think that will be it.”
On the dynamics behind a Punk/Rollins match: “He left with some stink on him. Rollins is going to pick on that, and that may be the angle of the main event. But if Punk’s put in there with anybody else, I think he’d get some heat on himself. Even as great as he is, it’s like when Cody didn’t win at WrestleMania [38], people were really mad. But when he wins, the pop is going to be so much bigger.”
On the current WWE roster: “Everybody talks about the Attitude Era, but have they ever had a lineup like this in WWE? Ever?. It’s crazy. I’m not gonna say it’s only him, but Hunter has done an amazing job.”
On Triple H learning from Vince McMahon: “Hunter learned from Vince many years ago that business is business, and they’re really [different]. I’ve never seen a company [as hot as current WWE]. WCW was a very slow slide. Tony Khan was the new guy on the block, AEW had all the hype on social media … it’s like it’s non-existent.”

With WrestleMania 40 just around the corner, fans are eagerly speculating about the potential headliner matches for the event. Former AAA booker Kevin Sullivan recently shared his thoughts on the matter during an episode of his podcast, “Tuesday with The Taskmaster.” According to Sullivan, if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson doesn’t compete, the likely frontrunners for the main event are CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns.
Sullivan believes that a match between CM Punk and Seth Rollins would be a captivating showdown for Night 1 of WrestleMania 40. He suggests that the story for this match has already begun with the two wrestlers holding back and causing trouble backstage. The dynamics between Punk and Rollins could make for an intense and highly anticipated main event.
When it comes to Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, Sullivan sees them as the potential main event for WrestleMania 40. He believes that the build-up and storyline leading to this match will be significant, as Cody Rhodes has experienced disappointment in the past, such as not winning at WrestleMania 38. Sullivan predicts that if Rhodes were to win this time, the crowd’s reaction would be explosive.
Sullivan also took a moment to praise the current WWE roster, stating that it may be one of the strongest lineups in the history of the company. He acknowledges the work of Triple H, who has played a significant role in shaping the roster and creating compelling storylines. Sullivan credits Triple H’s ability to learn from Vince McMahon and his understanding that business is business.
Comparing the current wrestling landscape to previous eras, Sullivan notes that WCW’s decline was a slow slide, while AEW, the new competitor on the block, had a lot of hype on social media but has seemingly faded away. In contrast, WWE remains a dominant force in the industry.
As fans eagerly await WrestleMania 40, these potential headliner matches have sparked excitement and anticipation. Whether it’s CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins or Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns, the stage is set for an unforgettable event.
