Paul Wight Says He’d Portray ‘Captain Insano’ Again If Tony Khan Could Secure The Rights To The Character
Paul Wight is open to the idea of another run as “Captain Insano” if Tony Khan could get the rights to the character.
Wight was a guest on Miro’s YouTube stream and talked about the potential of him playing the role again, noting that Tony Khan was working on getting the rights to use it. For those that don’t remember, Wight had a cameo in Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy as the pro wrestler called Captain Insano. Wight says he’d not only be open to the idea if Khan could get the rights to it, but he’d “rock the ever-loving tits off it.”
“Well, here’s the thing, Tony Khan is really good friends with Frank, one of the writers or creators of [The] Waterboy. The Captain Insano character, I think Tony’s trying real hard to get the rights to that and do something with it. I told Tony, ‘If you get Captain Insano, I will rock the ever-loving tits off it. Man, I’ll get the red boots and the whole nine yards. ‘Captain Insano shows no mercy, brother!’ I’ll have fun with it,” Wight said, “that’s one of the ones that would be a great, fun gig and break out Captain Insano every now and then.”
It would appear that the “Frank” that Wight references is Frank Coraci, who directed The Waterboy and is a frequent collaborator with Sandler. After Wight signed with All Elite Wrestling in February, it was revealed that AEW had applied for a trademark on the Captain Insano character. Speaking to Renee Paquette on her Oral Sessions podcast, Wight shared a story about how Hulk Hogan advised him to use the gimmick again.
“You know what’s funny? When I did The Waterboy years ago,” Wight told Paquette, “Hogan actually goes ‘Brother, you should get back into that, that gimmick is money. Captain Insano, that’s money brother.’ I think the whole reason he did Mr. America is because he was infatuated with Captain Insano.”
