Paul Wight says the ring gear you saw him wearing in a recent AEW promo pic isn’t even the outfit he’ll be wearing for his eventual in-ring return, but planning it all out has been an exciting endeavor.
Paul Wight recently spoke with WrestleZone and was asked about plans for his in-ring return with All Elite Wrestling, including the preview of his ring gear that eagle-eye fans might have already spotted. Tony Khan was profiled by Forbes in June, and one of the photos showed Wight sporting a new singlet with ‘PW’ on one of the shoulder straps.
Asked if that’s what fans can expect to see him in whenever he steps back in the ring, Wight said he’s already changed his mind a few times about what he’ll wear. Although he joked that the promotion team might be getting mad at him for switching things up, the former world champion had a positive take on the situation and said he hasn’t had this much excitement about what his in-ring future will look like in a long time.
“It’s funny, I’ve changed my ring gear three times since then. [laughs] This is the first time in, I don’t know how many years I finally get to reinvent myself a little bit. I’m trying to find updated gear that’s not so much retro, the same gear that we’ve seen me in for years and years and years. Stuff that’s more appealing for toy manufacturing for merchandising and branding, trying to experience all that and just finding a new look that encompasses who Paul Wight is, so it’s a discovery process right now.
“I’m driving the photo guys nuts at AEW because I’m trying to find something I like and then change my mind. So, this is the first time in—geez; I don’t know? I guess back in the Dungeon of Doom [days] since I’ve had the chance to really figure out, ‘this is what I’m going to look like, this is how I’m going to perform, this is what I’ll be comfortable performing in.’ So, yeah, we’re still experimenting and still having fun, but I think I’ve got it narrowed down now. We’ve got some good options out there for a different look.
“We want new merchandise that doesn’t look like the old Big Show character, a new look that doesn’t look like the old Big Show character or the old Giant character. So hopefully, this new look will breathe in a little bit of life and let everyone know that though it’s the same person on the inside, there’s a lot of new things. There’s a new paint job, so we’re ready to rock and roll.”
Wight debuted a new entrance theme on the August 11 episode of Dynamite when he came to the rescue of Tony Schiavone after The Factory attacked his son, Matt. Wight ended up chokeslamming Aaron Solo, and set the tone for what looks like a feud against the faction in the future. Check out our full interview with Paul Wight at this link.
