Pat McAfee has quickly risen to the forefront of NXT. In an interview with Matthew Aguilar of Comic Book, McAfee discussed his run on the black-and-gold-brand. He also previewed his match at NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
McAfee talked about his promos on NXT, which have been well-received from the start. He said that he’s allowed to be himself, and that WWE, and Triple H specifically, give him a lot of freedom. “‘[Triple H] was like, ‘I’m not going to tell you how to be Pat McAfee,'” said McAfee via Aguilar. “‘So it’s been, the amount of trust I think, that Mr. H and Cole and all the incredible people behind the scenes at NXT have put in me is one that I view as a great honor.'”
He also shared his thoughts on his match at NXT TakeOver: WarGames. “‘We’re going to win WarGames,'” said McAfee via Aguilar. “‘The team that I pieced together here…it’s an incredibly bada– group, and I literally see no possible chance for any other outcome than a victory,'” said McAfee via Aguilar.
McAfee also looked back on his first match. He made his in-ring debut at NXT TakeOver 30. At the time, McAfee said he thought it was his one shot to wrestle on a prominent stage. “‘I think I was viewing it as I’m never going to get an opportunity to do this again, just because of how many times I asked to get into the wrestling part of the business,'” said McAfee via Aguilar. “‘I viewed it as if it was my only opportunity I was ever going to get in my entire life.'”
Of course, fans now know that McAfee went on to become a featured player in NXT. But after his first match, he said there weren’t any solid plans for him to continue his run in NXT. “‘Afterward, I don’t think there were any plans by anybody to continue it….[but] when the opportunity arose yet again, it was like, yeah, I have to go do this,'” said McAfee via Aguilar.
McAfee, Pete Dunne, Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan will face The Undisputed Era at NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
