GUNTHER will face off against Pat McAfee at the WWE Backlash 2025, a match eagerly looked forward to by fans.
The setup for the match was done during this week’s episode of WWE RAW. McAfee started the proceedings by giving an emotional promo about his journey in professional wrestling, highlighting his dedication and hard work. He also mentioned his loyalty, primarily towards his friend Michael Cole, stating that anyone who disrespected Cole was disrespecting him.
He then shifted the focus on GUNTHER, revealing that he was warned by his friends and family to stay away from “The Ring General.” Regardless, McAfee confidently proclaimed, and concluded by challenging Nick Aldis.
Nick Aldis initially refused to lift Gunther’s suspension but also confirmed that McAfee and the former World Heavyweight Champion would face each other at WWE Backlash. McAfee agreed without a moment’s hesitation, setting the stage for an intense match.
Nick Aldis: “Pat, what I’m proposing is this. Pat McAfee vs The Ring General Gunther, 1v1, at Backlash!”
Pat McAfee: “DEAL!”

The latest WWE RAW episode started with a key promo featuring Seth Rollins, Paul Heyman, and Bron Breakker.
Rollins celebrated his WrestleMania 41 victory before mocking fans of CM Punk and Roman Reigns, calling himself the future of WWE and introducing his crew comprising of Heyman and Breakker, asserting their dominance.
However, the fiesta was interrupted by Sami Zayn to a tremendous cheer. Reminding Rollins of their common past, Zayn lambasted the newly formed group as “a load of crap”— accusing Rollins as a manipulator. But Rollins shot back, defending his partners, and threatened Zayn that he must choose his side.
Late into the show, Rollins extended one last invitation to Zayn in the ring. Despite accepting their real-life friendship, Zayn declined the proposal, accusing Rollins of psychological manipulation and refusing to be another pawn. Fired up, Zayn told Rollins to “go to hell.”
After Zayn turned his back, a dejected Rollins stayed still while Bron Breakker blitzed the ring. In the final event of the night, Breakker launched a savage attack on Zayn, landing multiple spears and causing the referee to intervene. To add salt to the wound, Rollins added a stomp to Zayn as Raw went off-air.
