WWE recently reinstated the World Heavyweight Championship due to Roman Reigns holding the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

Fightful Select reports that the decision to unify the WWE Title and Universal Title was made after Roman Reigns was pulled from WWE Day 1 on January 1st, 2022.

At the time, Brock Lesnar was to be crowned the WWE Champion, then move on to the unification match against Reigns at WrestleMania 38. There were no plans to unify the championships before that point.

Since WrestleMania 38, fans have been speculating when WWE will split the two titles again, and as it turns out, internal documents did include a plan to do so.

There was a time when Drew McIntyre or Seth Rollins would’ve faced Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship, but within a few weeks, the idea of splitting the titles was discarded.

The report also notes that while the King and Queen Of The Ring tournament was originally supposed to happen in May as the Saudi Arabia event, plans were changed due to the booking around the WWE World Heavyweight Championship taking place at the Middle Eastern pay-per-view.
