The Elite (Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks and ‘Hangman’ Adam Page) recently announced that they have signed contract extensions with AEW. A few days prior to the announcement, it was reported that the company had virtually given up trying to sign them, despite Omega in particular being someone the company was very interested in.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer shed further light on the situation, noting that while WWE was indeed interested in Omega coming in as a top talent, many felt that Seth Rollins would be a more reliable in the role of “the best in-ring wrestler in the company” due to his younger age, better physical condition and experience with the company. Meltzer wrote,
“One person with knowledge of WWE’s interest has noted to us that while Omega was top talent who would have been used as a top guy, in the mix with the likes of Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Seth Rollins and Brock Lesnar level guys, that because of long-term physical durability that they believed Rollins as the role of the best in-ring wrestler in the company had more time in that role than Omega would have.”
