In September 2021, Metalik (formerly Gran Metalik) requested his release from WWE due to a lack of opportunities. On November 4, WWE officially released Metalik from his contract following which the masked wrestler debuted for AEW and ROH as Mascara Dorada.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that the sole reason Metalik is able to use his name is that he owns it. While WWE owns the “Gran Metalik” name, the 34-year-old luchador owns just “Metalik.”

From 2005-2008, the Mexican wrestler competed as Metalik before adopting the ring name Mascara Dorada.

Metalik desires to work in Japan and Mexico but is unable to obtain a green card at the moment. He cannot leave the United States until he obtains the green card, but it’s expected to happen in May.
