A bill was introduced into the New York State Senate this past March that would require the State Athletic Commission to review the need for regulation and licensing of professional wrestling in New York.
The bill proposes that the Athletic Commission examine the regulation and licensing of professional wrestling in other states and consult with “professional wrestling participants, and other stakeholders and entities who may assist in identifying areas of concern regarding the safety of professional wrestlers and its spectators.”
The Athletic Commission is required to submit a report detailing its findings by November 1, 2023, and the act will take effect immediately and expire in July 2024.
If the bill is passed, it could initiate the process of removing pro wrestling from the New York State Athletic Commission’s oversight.
