New Japan President Harold Meij On The Company’s Return, The Importance Of Being Cautious

New Japan Pro-Wrestling president Harold Meij spoke with Gaurav Bhatt of The Indian Express and discussed the company’s resumption of live events. Meij reflected on the decision to stop holding shows with crowds; he said that he feels prioritizing safety is better for the company’s long-term health. “’The responsibility we hold as an industry leader in Japan and worldwide weighs heavily on our shoulders; ultimately this was the only sensible decision we could have taken as a responsible corporate citizen,’” said Meij via Bhatt. “’A business must be viewed as a long-term entity, and I believe our decision to side with caution over profit will in the long term be seen to have been the right one.’”

Meij also discussed the importance of living up to New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s reputation. “’In our corporate logo are the words ‘King of Sports’,’” said Meij via Bhatt. “’It is being seen this way that we led an initiative by visiting elected officials to push for government support in creating clear policies, sustainable programs, guidelines, and testing support for our and other sports in Japan.’”

New Japan Pro-Wrestling recently returned with the first several shows for the New Japan Cup, which will conclude July 11. The upcoming schedule can be found here.
