Plans are moving forward for the reported international expansion that is being dubbed “NXT India.”
POST Wrestling is reporting there is a shooting date listed on the calendar for Friday, January 22nd for an “India Special”, and Indian talent also took part in a photoshoot this week.
It’s believed that the project, which still has not been confirmed publicly by WWE, will be a new series, and it may begin with a one or two-night event to launch the show. Plans for the show would call for it to air on both linear television in India and WWE Network. Despite the details about the taping format, POST noted that they can’t confirm the show would be branded under the “NXT India” name. Additionally, it was stressed that this has been a long-term project with many changing variables, and possibly more to come.
POST Wrestling first reported plans for the developing project on December 11, with Sportskeeda later reporting a tournament would be featured on the show with many Indian wrestlers. Some names included The Singh Brothers, Indus Sher, Jinder Mahal, and Jeet Rama, and the anticipated air date for the show is January 26, the same day that India celebrates ‘Republic Day’.
Sportskeeda also noted that this new show might also air on one more Sony Sports Network, in addition to the two mentioned in the initial POST report. This past March, WWE and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) announced a five-year extension to their existing relationship.
