Renowned actor Mickey Rourke has shared candid details about the tough journey he undertook for the creation of The Wrestler, as well as the sustained impact his role in the project had on him.
The Wrestler, released in 2008, narrates the life of Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson (portrayed by Rourke), a veteran wrestler grappling with the reality that his time in the wrestling ring is nearing an end.
In a revelation made on Instagram, Rourke expressed his regret over the rigorous efforts he devoted to the film, which resulted in persistent health complications.
In his own words, he stated: “Was just wrapping up my daily 2-hour workout. I was reflecting on the time when I was filming ‘The Wrestler.’ I genuinely regret bulking up by 70 pounds to look the part. I felt uneasy in my own body, and it took nearly 4 or 5 years to get back to 180.”
In a candid confession, he added: “The plan was not well-thought-out, I admittedly used steroids and consumed huge quantities of food six times a day. It was a imprudent decision on my part. My only real achievement was spending long hours working out in the gym. I regret it, but I’ve made numerous irresponsible decisions in my lifetime.”
“I shudder when I see pictures of myself. I’ve never claimed to be the smartest. Anyway, I was verbalizing my thoughts and thought maybe I could pass this message onto a young man seeking to bulk up,” he continued.
Rourke’s ventures in the wrestling domain didn’t escape the radar of WWE, who onboarded Rourke in 2009. He engaged in a rivalry with Chris Jericho and managed to knock out Y2J after Jericho’s victory at WrestleMania 25 in April 2009.
