Michelle McCool Didn’t Want The Undertaker’s Streak to End
WWE wrestler Triple H, Yuna Ito and WWE wrestler Michelle McCool appear the MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2009 at Saitama Super Arena on May 30, 2009 in Saitama, Japan.
Speaking with Digital Spy about her husband’s Last Ride documentary on the WWE Network, Michelle McCool revealed a few tidbits from the last few years of Undertaker’s career. One is regarding his match with Roman Reigns, which Undertaker sincerely thought was going to be his final bow in WWE.
The gesture of leaving his hat in the ring, that was his idea. That was his way of telling the fans goodbye because as The Undertaker character he’s not going to give a speech and thank the fans, just because of the character. So when he did that I thought, ‘okay this could be it’. But when he came over and gave me a kiss, that told me he’s serious because he broke character for the first time ever. So I felt for the first time he might really be done, this might be it. So I truly believed it at the time.
Michelle said that she wasn’t surprised by Taker signing on for more competition and that she completely supports him. In fact, McCool is seemingly a big a fan as anyone of The Deadman. Like many of his fans, she was shocked years ago when Undertaker lost his WrestleMania winning streak.
The streak is just so big to me and as a fan being selfish, I didn’t want the streak to end like a lot of other people. Obviously, it’s business. There were no questions asked when they asked Mark to do it and obviously he’s a consummate professional. But it was shocking. I think I was just as shocked as a lot of people, it was so crazy.
Undertaker’s most recent match took place at this year’s WrestleMania, the cinematic Boneyard Match against AJ Styles. Michelle revealed that Taker hasn’t watched the finished product as of yet, but that she loved it. However, she does think that cinematic matches take their toll on Taker in a different way.
When you’re doing the cinematic matches like the Boneyard Match they would have to stop at certain points for camera angles to change or like when he busted his arm open five minutes into the match, to stop the bleeding and get the glass out of his arm, stuff like that. When that happens your body’s cooling off so you don’t get to stretch and warm up again. So it’s a little bit harder in that sense to stop and go.
While Undertaker says he’s still searching for one final match to cap off his legendary career, Michelle thinks that it’s more about closing the loop with the fans. “It’s just that emotional closure that will kind of make it all okay.”
