In a recent conversation with Uproxx, Mercedes Mone opened up about her triumphant return to the wrestling ring with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), her reasons for teaming up with Tony Khan’s company, and much more.
Here are some key takeaways from the enlightening interview:
Discussing her comeback to AEW’s ring, she expressed gratitude, “It’s really just leading with gratitude, thankful to be a part of this wrestling community still. The last year was the craziest year of my whole life, not knowing where I was going to be in wrestling, but leading with gratitude and staying positive.”
On her decision to join AEW, she stated, “I knew where I wanted to be and what I want to leave in professional wrestling, to take this women’s division to a whole new panorama. I had a vision of contributing more to women’s wrestling, and I was certain that AEW was the perfect platform for it. The narrative for women in this division has changed dramatically. I also think that women’s wrestling has never been as good as it is now, even featuring as the main event in AEW pay-per-views. I am elated to be part of this evolution and look forward to more exciting occasions.”
Discussing her journey to recovery after an injury, Mercedes Mone said, “For me, it was a mental battle of stepping back into the ring and training, overcoming the fear of climbing or jumping from the top rope and even running. My injury was so severe that I was unable to walk for over three months. I kept reassuring myself that I’ve still got this. I trained with Tyler Breeze for three months gearing up for my AEW debut. That involved regaining my confidence in the ring which took some time. But now, I am feeling better than ever, and here I am, proudly holding two titles, so I’m feeling great.”
On the topic of Mariah May’s swift ascent, she voiced her pride saying, “I am super proud to witness her growth from a distance. She entered as a super fan, passionate about wrestling, so much so that she relocated from England to Japan and trained in Stardom to perfect her skills. Today, she is our women’s world champion, overthrowing Toni Storm in one of the best storylines in women’s history. Watching her rapid rise and acknowledging her talent in the ring is astounding. As I said earlier, we have the best women’s division right now. I am certainly eyeing the title she has around her waist.”
