Earlier this year, Matt Menard stepped in to replace Chris Jericho as part of the commentary team for AEW Rampage. He had recently made an appearance on the “AEW Unrestricted” podcast where he disclosed the invaluable advice imparted to him by his former boss. Menard quoted,
“[He emphasized to me] you should always be yourself, continue doing what you have been doing. I had already been in the field for a while, having kicked off with Dark Elevation. I relished that gig for roughly a year, say, eight to nine months. I had the chance to work with diverse partners, including Ian, Excalibur, and Tony hopping in occasionally. You also had to mention the unmissable Paul Wight. Just keep being you, and enjoy yourself.”
He further elaborated, “One of the most noteworthy pieces of advice I’ve ever adopted was, if you’re genuinely enjoying yourself, the audience will equally share that joy. I always keep that at the back of my mind. Make sure you’re enjoying the moment. Even if you misname a move or fumble with your lines, as long as your energy reverberates that of someone having a great time, that will transmit to the home audience. That is the key lesson I have imbibed from Chris’ commentary style.”
