AEW’s Matt Hardy was very impressed by A24’s ‘The Iron Claw‘ which delves into the lives, careers, and tragedies of the Von Erich family.
On a recent edition of his “The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy” podcast, Hardy shared his take on the new biopic and the response to Aaron Dean Eisenberg’s portrayal of Ric Flair. He said,
“I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought they did an excellent job telling the story of the Von Erichs. I know there was stuff moved around time-table wise and I know there was a brother that wasn’t even included in the movie and some of the other events were left out, but guys, they had two hours and a little change. That’s a lot of storytelling, to include all of those other things I feel like you’d need much, much more time. So, I was good. I was good with what they did. It packed a very powerful punch and it really came off as a sad, hard tragedy that the whole Von Erich family was.
“The more I watched [the Flair clip] back, it was very much not like Ric. I feel like it could have been closer but at the end of the day, I feel like someone that is a casual fan that doesn’t give a sh*t about pro wrestling, it doesn’t make a difference to those people. I think the people who got their panties in a wad are just people that are die-hard wrestling fans.”
Eisenberg’s portrayal of The Nature Boy has been widely panned by wrestling fans who feel the actor failed to convey an iota of the same charisma as Flair.

AEW wrestler Matt Hardy recently expressed his admiration for the biopic ‘The Iron Claw,’ which focuses on the Von Erich family. In a recent episode of his podcast, “The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy,” he discussed the film and shared his thoughts on Aaron Dean Eisenberg’s portrayal of Ric Flair.
Hardy stated that he thoroughly enjoyed the movie and believed that it did an excellent job of telling the story of the Von Erichs. He acknowledged that some events were rearranged in terms of the timeline, and one of the brothers was not included in the film. However, he understood that with a limited runtime of two hours, it would be challenging to include every detail. Despite these omissions, Hardy felt that the movie still packed a powerful punch and effectively conveyed the tragic nature of the Von Erich family’s story.
Regarding Eisenberg’s portrayal of Ric Flair, Hardy admitted that it was not entirely accurate. He believed that the actor could have been closer to capturing Flair’s essence. However, he also noted that casual fans who are not deeply invested in professional wrestling might not notice or care about the discrepancies. Hardy suggested that the negative reactions primarily came from die-hard wrestling fans who had high expectations for the portrayal.
Eisenberg’s portrayal of Flair has faced criticism from wrestling fans who felt that he failed to capture Flair’s charisma. Many fans believe that Flair’s larger-than-life personality was not adequately portrayed in the film.
In conclusion, Matt Hardy praised ‘The Iron Claw’ for its storytelling and its depiction of the Von Erich family’s tragic history. While he acknowledged some shortcomings in Eisenberg’s portrayal of Ric Flair, he also recognized that casual fans might not be as critical. The film has sparked discussions among wrestling fans about the accuracy of its portrayals and the challenges of condensing a complex story into a limited runtime.
