On a recent edition of his “The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy” podcast, Matt Hardy spoke about his final days with WWE and how the company was willing to offer him some notable programs. He said,

”One of my favorite moments with Randy [Orton], as crazy as this is, was right before I left in those last three years, where we did the promo and I came out to take up for Adam Copeland and then he attacks me, then I have this brace on my neck and that was initially going to be it. But the segment, Vince loved the segments so much, he loved the interaction, he loved our character work and apparently, it did a decent number too.

“So then I came back the next week and I was going to originally have a virtually three-segment match. And then I was going to wrestle him after having this neck brace on, my neck was broken or fractured or whatever. And it ended up changing because I think that was a bone they were trying to throw me to try and get me to re-sign, and maybe I’d do it if I was in this angle with Randy, they were promising me some other stuff with Bray and The Fiend going forward.”

Hardy teamed with Bray Wyatt in 2018 and held the RAW Tag Team Championships with him. Wyatt passed away aged 36 in August of this year.

WWE attempted to entice Matt Hardy into signing a new contract by proposing a feud with The Fiend, according to the former WWE and current AEW wrestler. Hardy left WWE in 2020 and made his debut for AEW in the same year, but has yet to win a championship in Tony Khan’s promotion.

During a recent episode of his podcast, “The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy,” Hardy discussed his final days with WWE and revealed that the company offered him some significant storylines. He mentioned a memorable moment with Randy Orton before he left, where they had a promo segment and Hardy came out to defend Adam Copeland (Edge). Orton attacked Hardy, who wore a neck brace as part of the storyline. The segment received positive feedback from Vince McMahon and the audience.

Hardy explained that he was initially supposed to have a three-segment match with Orton the following week, wrestling with a neck brace on due to a supposed broken or fractured neck. However, plans changed, and Hardy believes that WWE used this angle as a way to persuade him to re-sign with the company. They also promised him future storylines involving Bray Wyatt and The Fiend.

In 2018, Hardy teamed up with Bray Wyatt and won the RAW Tag Team Championships. Unfortunately, Wyatt passed away at the age of 36 in August of this year.

It is interesting to note the behind-the-scenes negotiations and strategies employed by WWE to retain or bring back talent. While Hardy ultimately chose to join AEW, it is clear that WWE saw value in his character work and wanted to capitalize on it by involving him in high-profile feuds.
