Matt Cardona tried his best to make the Hype Bros work but he believes his tag team with Mojo Rawley flat-out sucked.
The Hype Bros came together in 2015 when Cardona (Zack Ryder at the time) was sent to NXT, and the pair were brought to SmackDown as part of the 2016 brand extension.
Speaking on a recent edition of the “Off Her Chops” podcast, Cardona recalled working with Rawley. He said,
“It sucked… At first, it was an opportunity and I took it as an opportunity, went to NXT, alright, let’s f***ing go. Me and Mojo, we both f***ing tried… It’s nothing against him, I just f***ing hated it.”
The team would split in November 2017 after Rawley attacked Ryder/Cardona on SmackDown following a loss to the Bludgeon Brothers.

The Hype Bros: A Failed Tag Team Partnership
In the world of professional wrestling, tag teams play a crucial role in creating excitement and delivering memorable moments. However, not all tag team partnerships are successful, and sometimes, even the most talented wrestlers struggle to find chemistry with their partners. One such example is the Hype Bros, consisting of Matt Cardona (formerly known as Zack Ryder) and Mojo Rawley.
The Hype Bros came together in 2015 when Cardona was sent to NXT, and the duo was later brought to SmackDown as part of the 2016 brand extension. Initially, it seemed like an opportunity for both wrestlers to shine and make a mark in the tag team division. However, as revealed by Cardona in a recent interview on the “Off Her Chops” podcast, their partnership was far from successful.
Cardona expressed his dissatisfaction with the Hype Bros, stating, “It sucked… At first, it was an opportunity, and I took it as an opportunity, went to NXT, alright, let’s f***ing go. Me and Mojo, we both f***ing tried… It’s nothing against him, I just f***ing hated it.” These candid remarks shed light on the difficulties they faced as a team and Cardona’s personal feelings towards the partnership.
Despite their efforts, the Hype Bros eventually split in November 2017 after Rawley attacked Cardona on SmackDown following a loss to the Bludgeon Brothers. This breakup marked the end of their tag team journey and left fans wondering what could have been if things had worked out differently.
Reflecting on their time together, it is evident that the Hype Bros failed to achieve the success they had hoped for. While tag team partnerships can be unpredictable and require a certain level of chemistry and teamwork, it is clear that Cardona and Rawley struggled to find their groove. Sometimes, even talented individuals can find it challenging to work together effectively, leading to a lackluster performance and overall dissatisfaction.
Despite the disappointment of the Hype Bros’ failed tag team partnership, both Cardona and Rawley have continued their careers as singles competitors. Cardona has since left WWE and has found success on the independent wrestling scene, while Rawley remains with the company, exploring new opportunities and potential storylines.
In conclusion, the Hype Bros serve as a reminder that not all tag team partnerships in professional wrestling are successful. Despite their best efforts, Matt Cardona and Mojo Rawley struggled to make their partnership work, leading to its eventual demise. However, their individual journeys continue, and fans eagerly await what the future holds for these talented wrestlers.
