Former WWE Wrestler Matt Cardona has said that he wishes to end his career with WWE. Cardona was let go from WWE in April 2020, and has since spent his time involved with the independent circuits such as TNA Wrestling, GCW, and NWA, among others.
In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, he looked back on his post-WWE journey. Some key remarks from the interview include:
Discussing his torn pectoral muscle injury, Cardona said, “I’ve done the clotheslining move over a top rope hundreds, if not thousands of times. But one day I just felt a pop… I had to arrange for surgery right away. Instead of feeling sorry and indulging myself with junk food for days, which I admittedly did, I re-planned my entire summer. As a matter of fact, I overbooked myself to the point that my June was busier than any month since I left WWE in 2020.”
Cardona also referred to the injury as a subsequent asset that allowed him to grow as an athlete. “I truly believe that getting injured was a hidden blessing since it made me re-examine myself. The injury worked as the motivational kick I required to understand that I was becoming too comfy being the best,” he said.
When asked about a possible return to WWE, Cardona expressed positive sentiments. He stated, “Despite being outside WWE for four years now in 2024, I honestly feel like I’m closer to the WWE title than I was when I was with them. It’d be grand to have another WrestleMania moment, perform in Madison Square Garden as Matt Cardona. Zack Ryder is history now. I am thankful for Zack Ryder for it was that experience that taught me and paved the way for my current journey.”
