Marty Scurll On Bringing Companies Together And More

Marty Scurll recently appeared on the Behind The Gorilla podcast where he discussed several topics, including his goals as the head booker of Ring of Honor. Here are some highlights:
On the dumbest thing he’s see in wrestling:
Scurll: I just offered to put up half a million dollars for this championship match in a match where, the last time it happened, I lost. So that might be one of the dumbest things in professional wrestling, depending on which way you look at it. Me, I think it’s a very smart investment because I knew the only way I could get Nick [Aldis] to agree to give me a title match was to…we all know Nick, all he cares about is money and being champion, of course. But a big part of this has been about money so I put it up on the line, but I wouldn’t count that as one of the dumbest things in professional wrestling because I’m very confident that I can beat Nick and I’m very confident that the result this time, at the Crockett Cup 2020 is gonna be a lot different from the previous, but yeah, that from the outside looking in might seem pretty dumb
On the improving relationship between NWA and Ring of Honor:
Scurll: Well yeah, that’s one of the things that I wanted to do for Ring of Honor was help build these relationships with other companies. In professional wrestling now, where there’s a lot of big companies and it seems like they’re all competing with each other, it’s kind of like, well why can’t we work together? You know what I mean? If you’ve got two great companies, rather than going at it head to head, let’s work together and, at the end of the day, that’s gonna be best for business for everyone, but most importantly the fans. I see all the time that fans are so interested in cross promotional stuff like having a big dream match, this guy from Ring of Honor face this guy from NWA or whatever it may be. If that’s what the fans want, let’s give it to them, why not? I’ve got many friends in the business, like, ‘Hey guys let’s work together,’ and I think that’s my aim in professional wrestling right now, is helping these companies work together so the fans can get the absolute best product that they deserve
On how his life has changed since becoming the head booker:
Scurll: It’s been a real sort of juxtaposition in my life because I’ve gone from wrestling for the past 15/16 years to this new role where I’m essentially running a wrestling company so, during the week, where I used to train and work out and go tan, now I’m working 24 hours a day. So it’s a lot different, but it’s very rewarding because now my main purpose or my main priority is not necessarily to myself, but it’s this company.
