Less than twelve months following his staged retirement scene with John Cena, Mark Henry stepped down from the wrestling ring.

In a recent session at Monopoly Events’ For The Love of Wrestling forum, hosted in Manchester, England, Henry disclosed the injuries he sustained in the aftermath of his hypocrisy retirement segment in 2013.

According to Henry, “I was fortunate. I had a couple more shots at becoming a world champion but got injured. It was quite hard to envision myself preparing for WrestleMania, grabbing the belt successfully, only for me to require a shoulder operation or a knee surgery. It was disappointing, but unlike the previous instances, the process was rewarding this time. I’m sure many were not happy when I chose to retire six months after my fake retirement speech with John Cena, especially since I didn’t secure a title win.”

He went on to say, “A lot of people conceived that I deserved victory and that I was on the short end of the stick with WWE, but that’s far from the truth. It was I who decided to retire. My physical health had taken such a toll that I was not capable of serving as an effective champion. It’s a requirement for a champion to be in a position to take on all comers.”
