In the aftermath of this week’s AEW Dynamite episode, Mariah May assaulted Toni Storm post-match, following her triumphant win at the women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament.
During a conversation with Sports Illustrated on Thursday about her win against Willow Nightingale, May reflected on her journey to making it to the top, headlining this week’s AEW Dynamite episode, and her post-match attack on Toni Storm.
Key points from the interview are summarized below:
In regards to winning the women’s Owen Hart Tournament, May expressed: “Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted nothing more than to be a wrestler. I was determined to make it to America, wrestle on TV, and I wasn’t going to give up until I did. I never quit. This is my moment, and no one can do it like me.”
When commenting on her progressive rise to her current status, she stated: “I’ve wrestled across Europe and Japan. I’ve trained in sports facilities and warehouses, even slept on floors. My success is not a product of privilege, I worked hard for it.”
On the topic of starring in this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite, she remarked: “My first chance to headline on Dynamite was a thrilling experience. Wrestling with Willow, who has already accomplished much, was great. I would definitely like to confront her again in the ring. Perhaps when I am the world champion.”
Discussing her attack on Storm after the match, she said: “That felt like a bonus celebration for my personal stride. That’s what it meant… My mother will be there at All In. She’ll see me crush the remains of Toni Storm from her front-row seat.”
Swerve Strickland, the AEW World Champion, also spoke to Sports Illustrated about his recent match with Will Ospreay during the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door III event and his sense of satisfaction derived from it. He commented,
“I’m proud of the narrative we spun during the match. It was an extraordinary rollercoaster. It was Will’s inaugural AEW main event pay-per-view – fans had been eagerly awaiting it, and it was all rather unpredictable. Who was going to emerge victorious – Swerve, or Will continuing his hot streak to win the title? This is a match we’ve craved for a long time, and the timing was ideal. We weren’t patient anymore, we wanted the moment. We were eager to witness the best duel – the International champion versus the world champion. It was a showdown between two of the best competitors.”
