Major Backstage Update On The Future Of The AEW Continental Classic, Kenny Omega’s Status

An epic confrontation has been scheduled for AEW All In 2025, where Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada will battle it out in a title unification duel of monumental proportions.

During this week’s AEW Summer Blockbuster edition, the fight was officially confirmed. Also, it was established that the AEW International Championship and AEW Continental Championship would be merged into a single division – dubbed as the AEW Unified Championship.

According to Fightful Select, this particular face-off has been in planning stages for almost a year, with AEW finalizing the Okada vs. Omega main event for All In 2025 as early as December — preceding Omega’s comeback to New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Although the name “Intercontinental Championship” was reportedly never an option for the new title, internal debates have placed the AEW Unified Championship on a pedestal — accorded importance way beyond a mid-card title.

The reveal has already started impacting ticket sales positively. It’s reported that AEW sold over 1,400 extra tickets only in the past week attributable to the match announcement.

The future of the AEW Continental Classic should also not be a worry since the tournament is projected to proceed in subsequent cycles in spite of the title amalgamation.

Concerning the status of Kenny Omega post the Summer Blockbuster episode — his supposed injury is purely a part of a scripted plot and not a real one.
