Lex Luger remained confident that a WWE World Championship win would be his even after he failed in his title opportunity at WrestleMania X.

In the first WWE title match of the night, Luger was unable to dethrone Yokozuna due to the interference of guest referee Mr. Perfect.

This was Lex’s second pay-per-view match which saw him fail to win the gold after he previously earned a disqualification win over Yokozuna at SummerSlam 1993.

On a recent edition of his “Lex Expressed” podcast, Luger shared that he remained confident that a title win was possible despite these setbacks. He said,

“There was always a chance. That was actually…my intention was to re-sign [with WWE]… I can be stubborn, I guess if you want to use that word, [but] I was always confident. I was like ‘You know what? We went in a different direction, but I want to work my way back into contention and possibly [get back] up to the top of the card again and possibly be World Champion in WWE.”

Instead, Luger would sign with WCW in 1995 and would famously debut during the first episode of WCW Monday Nitro.

Luger would never win the WWE Championship but would be the man to dethrone Hollywood Hogan as WCW World Champion in August 1997.

Lex Luger’s Quest for the WWE World Championship

Lex Luger, a prominent professional wrestler in the 1990s, had his sights set on becoming the WWE World Champion. Despite facing setbacks and disappointments, Luger remained confident that he would eventually achieve his goal. Let’s delve into his journey and the challenges he encountered along the way.

At WrestleMania X, Luger had a golden opportunity to claim the WWE World Championship. However, in his match against Yokozuna, he fell short due to the interference of guest referee Mr. Perfect. This defeat marked the second time Luger failed to win the title in a pay-per-view event. Previously, he had earned a disqualification victory over Yokozuna at SummerSlam 1993.

Despite these setbacks, Luger never lost faith in his ability to become the WWE World Champion. In a recent episode of his podcast, “Lex Expressed,” he shared his unwavering confidence and determination. Luger expressed his intention to re-sign with WWE and work his way back into contention for the championship. He believed that even though the company had taken a different direction, he could still climb back up the ladder and achieve his ultimate goal.

However, fate had other plans for Lex Luger. In 1995, he made the decision to sign with World Championship Wrestling (WCW), a rival promotion to WWE. This move marked a significant turning point in his career. Luger would go on to make a memorable debut during the first episode of WCW Monday Nitro, making an immediate impact on the wrestling world.

Although Luger never captured the WWE Championship, he did achieve great success in WCW. In August 1997, he accomplished what he had been unable to do in WWE – he became the man to dethrone Hollywood Hogan and claim the WCW World Championship. This victory solidified Luger’s status as a top-tier wrestler and showcased his ability to reach the pinnacle of success in professional wrestling.

Lex Luger’s journey serves as a reminder that setbacks and disappointments do not define a person’s potential for success. Despite failing to win the WWE World Championship, Luger’s determination and resilience led him to achieve greatness in WCW. His story is a testament to the importance of perseverance and never giving up on one’s dreams.

While Lex Luger may not have fulfilled his WWE World Championship aspirations, his legacy as a talented and influential wrestler remains intact. His pursuit of the title serves as an inspiration to aspiring wrestlers and fans alike, reminding them that with dedication and belief in oneself, anything is possible in the world of professional wrestling.
