The next chapter of CM Punk’s wrestling career could see him compete in Japan if Rancid star Lars Frederiksen has his way.
Since Punk’s release from AEW in September, speculation has grown about where he will compete next, with Impact/TNA Wrestling and the NWA showing interest in him.
On the recent “The Wrestling Perspective” podcast, Frederiksen shared why Punk should take his skills to Japan. He said,
“Off the top of my head there’s only two companies in this world right now, one not even being in the United States, that I would say [to Punk], ‘That’s where you should go.’ Like, if he asked me where I thought he could go, where he should go, I would say Japan.
“I honestly would love to see him in Japan because I think that’s always been a dream for him. He’s never really done that, he’s never had the opportunity. If I was his manager and dictated [what he should do], I would say go to Japan, go live out that fantasy. You’re in basically the twilight of your career, you know, you’re pushing 50.”
Punk’s most recent match in Japan saw the then-WWE Champion retain his title against Alberto Del Rio at a December 2011 WWE live event in Yokohama.

CM Punk, one of the most iconic figures in professional wrestling, may be heading to Japan for the next chapter of his career. Lars Frederiksen, the guitarist for punk rock band Rancid, recently expressed his desire to see Punk compete in Japan during an episode of “The Wrestling Perspective” podcast.
Since his departure from AEW (All Elite Wrestling) in September, there has been much speculation about where CM Punk will go next. Several promotions, including Impact/TNA Wrestling and the NWA, have shown interest in signing him. However, Frederiksen believes that Japan would be the perfect destination for Punk.
Frederiksen stated, “Off the top of my head there’s only two companies in this world right now, one not even being in the United States, that I would say [to Punk], ‘That’s where you should go.’ Like, if he asked me where I thought he could go, where he should go, I would say Japan.”
He further explained his reasoning, saying, “I honestly would love to see him in Japan because I think that’s always been a dream for him. He’s never really done that, he’s never had the opportunity. If I was his manager and dictated [what he should do], I would say go to Japan, go live out that fantasy. You’re in basically the twilight of your career, you know, you’re pushing 50.”
CM Punk has indeed had limited experience wrestling in Japan. His most recent match in the country took place in December 2011 when he defended his WWE Championship against Alberto Del Rio at a live event in Yokohama. However, a full-fledged stint in Japan could provide Punk with new challenges and opportunities to showcase his skills.
Japan has long been regarded as one of the hotbeds of professional wrestling. Promotions like New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) and Pro Wrestling Noah have gained international recognition for their unique style and talented roster. Competing in Japan would not only allow Punk to fulfill a lifelong dream but also expose him to a different wrestling culture and fanbase.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, the possibility of CM Punk wrestling in Japan has generated excitement among fans. It remains to be seen where Punk will ultimately end up, but his potential presence in Japan would undoubtedly make waves in the wrestling world.
