On a recent episode of his “The Kurt Angle Show” podcast, Kurt Angle recalled wrestling AJ Styles in somewhat of an “amateur wrestling match” back in TNA. Providing some background as to how the idea came about and how its execution differed vis a vis his previous experiences wrestling, Angle said,

“It was mine and AJ’s. And the reason why is AJ told me that he was a state champion wrestler in high school. And I was like, ‘Oh, you were a state champion wrestler, so you know how to wrestle.’ He said, ‘Yes, I do.’ He was right. He did know how to wrestle. We set up this match where we had three rounds, like three periods like wrestling. And we took the ropes down and we wrestled. And I thought it was different. I wouldn’t say it was the greatest match in the world, but it was pretty good and I thought it was different.”

He continued, “A little harder than putting together a pro wrestling match? Sure. You have to remember that when you wrestle in amateur wrestling, you go by instinct. You don’t think about what you do. You go by the reaction. But here you have to remember what you’re doing and you’re doing amateur wrestling moves, and you’re trying to your memory is telling you what to do back to back rather than instinct. So it’s a little harder to do, but we were able to pull it off. I actually never watched it before, so I have no idea how it came out, but I thought we did pretty good.”

Kurt Angle Recalls Wrestling AJ Styles in an Amateur Wrestling Match

In a recent episode of his podcast, “The Kurt Angle Show,” former professional wrestler Kurt Angle shared his experience of wrestling AJ Styles in what he described as an “amateur wrestling match” during their time in TNA (Total Nonstop Action Wrestling). Angle reminisced about how the idea came about and how the execution differed from his previous wrestling experiences.

The decision to have an amateur wrestling match between Angle and Styles was based on Styles’ claim of being a state champion wrestler in high school. Intrigued by this revelation, Angle proposed the idea of showcasing their amateur wrestling skills in a match. Both wrestlers agreed, and they set up a match with three rounds, similar to the format of amateur wrestling competitions.

To make the match more authentic, the ropes were taken down, creating a ring without any boundaries. This allowed Angle and Styles to focus solely on their wrestling techniques and maneuvers. Angle admitted that while it wasn’t the greatest match in the world, it was still pretty good and offered a unique experience for both wrestlers and the audience.

Angle acknowledged that putting together an amateur wrestling match was a bit harder than a traditional professional wrestling match. In amateur wrestling, competitors rely on instinct and react to their opponent’s movements without thinking too much. However, in professional wrestling, performers need to remember their moves and sequences, relying on their memory rather than instinct.

Despite the added difficulty, Angle and Styles were able to pull off the amateur wrestling match successfully. Angle mentioned that he had never watched the match before, so he couldn’t comment on its outcome or quality. Nevertheless, he believed that they did a pretty good job considering the challenges they faced.

For fans interested in watching the match, a video link was provided in the article to The Kurt Angle Show’s YouTube channel. The video features the full match between Angle and Styles at TNA’s No Surrender 2008 event.
