AEW TBS Champion Kris Statlander is very proud to be the second-ever holder of that title but suspected that plans for her win could have been dropped at the last minute.
Statlander returned to AEW programming to capture the title from Jade Cargill at AEW Double or Nothing 2023, breaking Cargill’s undefeated streak in the process.
As she revealed to “Haus Of Wrestling,” Statlander was worried that a last-minute change of plans could have ruined her title victory. She said,
“Even the night before I was like, ‘We will see if this happens because things can change,’ and that’s how it is. It wasn’t that I don’t trust people. It’s just things happen so much and things need to be changed; it’s more that you don’t want to set yourself up for disappointment.”
Statlander also addressed the reports that AEW had her penciled in to dethrone Cargill for some time, in a clear sign of Tony Khan’s faith in her. She said,
“It was a very, very cool thing to know that a lot of people trusted me to be that one. I just hope that in that moment that I did return, and everything that I continue to do while I have that title, lives up to and exceeds expectations.”
Statlander will defend the AEW TBS Championship on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite against Taya Valkyrie.
The AEW TBS Champion also recently discussed how she defeated Cargill, and you can check out those comments here.
