In a recent episode of the “Keepin’ It 100” podcast, AAA wrestling promoter Konnan opened up about his professional discord with AEW President Tony Khan.
He brought attention to an occurrence in late 2022 where Khan decided to pull out Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo from the AAA Nocho de Campeones competition. This came about because another AEW wrestler tested positive for COVID-19, whereupon Khan wanted Melo to step in as a replacement.
Konnan conveyed his disbelief at Khan’s demeanor, expressing his confusion at Khan’s overarching dissatisfaction.
Khan’s unhappiness flared up again when Konnan spoke about the COVID-19 positive wrestler, referring to her indirectly as “some chick” during his podcast. He maintained that this phrase was less disrespectful than mentioning her full name.
Konnan expanded on this issue, “Tony reacted very harshly to this and I couldn’t wrap my head around why he got so defensive. I thought to myself, ‘You have such a big roster of women, but you chose to use her.. alright. Then on the podcast, I said ‘some chick contracted (COVID)’ because I presumed he wouldn’t want me to disclose her name. And when he confronted me about referring to her as ‘some chick,’ I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. So, would you rather I revealed her name? It’s not meant to be disrespectful. When someone says ‘chick,’ it’s a colloquial term. ‘Hey, that’s an attractive chick,’ is that considered disrespectful?”
He went on to cryptically add, “I’m going to be somewhat elusive about the information I’m about to share with you, but remember, what comes around goes around. And when the truth comes out, you’ll understand what I was addressing. So, enjoy your short-lived victories while you can.”
