On the latest episode of the ‘Kliq This’ podcast, Kevin Nash shared his thoughts on CM Punk spray-painting his X symbol on the original AEW World Championship title belt and declaring himself the ‘Real World Champion’ on an AEW Collision episode a couple of weeks ago.
This moment has of course drawn parallels to the nWo’s iconic act of spray-painting their letters on the WCW World Championship belt, as famously done after Hulk Hogan’s victory. This follows Punk borrowing many of Hogan’s gestures and mannerisms since his return to the company.
Reflecting on the symbolism of CM Punk’s spray-painting, Nash remarked,
“I didn’t see it, so I don’t have an opinion on it. It seemed to be effective then [25 years ago]. In Phil’s defense, I think you can grab that hold after 25 years.”
Addressing any potential concerns, Nash stated,
“I really don’t have a problem with it. I would be more entailed to think about when Shawn and Razor had the IC belts, and Shawn got suspended and they put the belt on Scott. They had a tournament, Scott won it, then we went to WrestleMania 10 and we had both the belts up there. I mean, it’s straight edge. It’s his gimmick.”
