Cody Rhodes losing to Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39 has evoked a polarizing response from fans and experts alike.
While some have outrightly called out the company for the rather surprising decision, there are others who are willing to give WWE and the personalities involved the chance to tell their story, seeing as how well it has been done and produced so far. However, Vince McMahon’s reported involvement in the creative process has no doubt swayed people to hold the former stance.
There have also been some experts who have defended and justified the decision, citing a variety of factors. Among them is WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash, whose primary argument is that Roman Reigns is approaching 1000 days as the Universal Champion. Speaking on his “Kliq This” podcast, he said,
“That close to 1000, you have to do it. It’d be I’d like [Cal] Ripken had turf toe and would have f*cking just taken a day off. There’s certain milestones, and right now, he’s too close to 1000. You’re only gonna be as successful as your f*cking top guy, and Roman’s the top guy right now. Roman has the cool factor, Roman’s your money guy.”
Nash then further stressed the importance of the 1000-day reign milestone, noting that it would lend unparalleled credibility to Roman Reigns.
“No because they never made 1,000 the benchmark. It’s just, to me, it’s so much easier for me to say, f*ck, I’m the winningest champion of the 90s. Just to be able to say I had the f*cking strap for 1000 days. If it’s 1003, it’s still over 1000 days, and it’s gonna be a long f*cking time until somebody says that again.”
