The Infamous Botched Finish of the 2005 Men’s Royal Rumble Match: John Cena and Batista’s Epic Mishap

In the world of professional wrestling, the Royal Rumble match is one of the most anticipated events of the year. It is a battle royal-style match where 30 wrestlers compete for a chance to headline WrestleMania. However, in 2005, the match took an unexpected turn when two of the biggest stars in WWE, John Cena and Batista, had a botched finish that left fans and officials in confusion.

During the 2005 Men’s Royal Rumble Match, John Cena and Batista found themselves as the final two participants. The original plan was for Batista to win the match and earn a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. However, things did not go as planned.

As the match reached its climax, Cena attempted to execute his finishing move, the FU (later renamed the Attitude Adjustment), on Batista. But The Animal countered with a Batista Bomb. Cena quickly recovered and blocked with a headscissors takedown, causing both men to go over the top rope and touch the floor simultaneously.

The referees for the RAW brand believed Batista to be the winner, while the SmackDown officials believed Cena to be the victor. This confusion led to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon making his way to the ring to resolve the situation. Despite tearing both of his quadriceps muscles earlier in the match, McMahon showed his dedication by getting involved.

McMahon decided to restart the match with Cena and Batista as the final two participants. This time, Batista managed to eliminate Cena following a spinebuster, officially winning the Royal Rumble match and securing his spot at WrestleMania.

In a recent episode of the “IMPAULSIVE” podcast, John Cena reflected on the botched finish and took responsibility for the mishap. He admitted that it was his fault, stating, “It was not Dave’s fault, it was on me. I am very bad at rotating backwards, so it was my fault.”

Cena also praised Vince McMahon for his dedication and guidance during the chaotic situation. Despite his injury, McMahon made a decisive call to restart the match and ensure a proper finish. Cena acknowledged McMahon’s work ethic and authority as the figurehead of WWE, saying, “He is the authority figure in WWE, he can say ‘restart the match.’ We restart it and Dave wins.”

The 2005 Men’s Royal Rumble Match will always be remembered for its unexpected twist and the resilience of both John Cena and Batista. Despite the botched finish, the match showcased their athleticism and determination to entertain the fans.
